Off the grid GPS units

I am not promoting Garmin, but I do find that they are now offering matured off the grid GPS and satellite communications gear. Their purchase of In Reach a few years back seems to be working its way into all of their product lines.

My question is, how many of you that operate portable, rely on handheld GPS units while you're in the field?

When I operate portable, I confine myself to the back 40 (sq. yards). Can usually see the house from there. (If I can't, I take a step to either side and I can see where home is).
