    Icom IC-7100?

If I recall correctly, the 7100 also has data capability without using a SignaLink. That would be good for Emcomms deployment requiring Winlink. As far as a power supply, would I want to put a DC power supply in the box? I was thinking more of a Bioenno battery (whether in the box with the radio or in a separate box). Maybe I would want to have the option for using commercial power? But I assume most applications would be ones where commercial power was not available. This is starting to sound like a (fun) project. I hope my wife does not read this message board.

    Icom IC-7100?

These are great suggestions. I guess my biggest question is whether it is a good and useful radio for portable ops and then as a secondary matter whether it is worth the investment to have a radio that would really only be used for being on the go. Right now, it would take me a little while to disconnect grounds, antennas, power, etc and pull a radio out to take it with me somewhere. That is what I mean by "disconnect and go". On field day, I saw one guy who had a musician's gear box rigged up with his radios in it, along with an antenna tuner and some other stuff. He can just take th
  3. Yeah. It is really disheartening to see our fellow citizens refusing to inconvenience themselves to slow the spread. In any event, I have not checked myself, but the word is the the Marine Corps signup is still not working.
  4. I found the comments about the types of traffic into net control during the immediate earthquake aftermath interesting. I participate in SKYWARN as a Ham spotter (I'm sure many on here do as well). The NWS is specific about the types of reports they want to hear. The net control script even details the specific types of information that operators are asked to report. How many times have you heard "Well, it's still sunny here" or "It just started raining" or whatever? Then again, if you listen to the HF bands at all, you will hear all manner of butchered phonetic alphabets. As a newbi
  5. I currently have the following gear in my shack: Icom ID-5100 for VHF/UHF Icom IC-7300 for HF ADG AT-100 Pro II Tuner for the HF rig Bioenno 40 battery Rig runner (coming soon: PWR Gate) In my car, I have another Icom ID-5100. I have been thinking about how to have a cost-effective go-rig for emergency comms (MCACS, ARES, event support, etc). Right now, it would be a hassle to pull gear out of my shack to take with me. I have been thinking about getting an Icom IC-7100 for use as an on-the-go rig. Given its VHF, UHF and HF capabili
  6. I signed up to volunteer with the MCM Ham folks, but the MCM sign up is not yet open. Given the resurgence of the virus, it seems doubtful that the MCM will happen (every other event has been cancelled this year).
  7. Thanks, Jim. I am super psyched to get on the HF bands and thanks for helping me get there. BTW, I would never have guessed what you really look like based on our brief meeting today. Such is the time, I guess. I am going to get moving on the OCFD. If I have trouble getting a line up on that walnut, do you think you'd be willing to lend a hand even under the current circumstances? It's fine if you're not comfortable. 73, Skip
